User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.8) Gecko/20100202 Firefox/3.5.8 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.8) Gecko/20100216 Thunderbird/3.0.2 If a note is composed in TB and sent using outgoing mail server smtp.gmail.com, Google changes its From Address to the user's gmail address. Speculation based on observed results and other people's analysis of how gmail handles mail: Apparently what occurs is that the mail is presented to smtp with the BCCs but gmail already has a copy of the mail so it decides not to overlay the fist copy with the one that contains BCCs for storage in the Sent Mail folder. Consequently the "sent" mail has no record of the BCCs. Testing was done using IMAP but I have no reason to believe POP would be different. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Send a mail which contains a BCC to anyone using gmail.smtp.com 2.Look at the note in the Sent Mail folder; the BCCs will be absent. 3.If you test so that you have a copy of the received note, it will have "Received" headers. If you try to copy that to a gmail folder, the Received headers will "disappear," since gmail will not replace its existing note with the copied one. Subject: Send a mail using gmail.smtp.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Send a mail using gmail.smtp.com Expected Results: I would expect to see the BCCs in the Sent Mail folder copy and the Received Headers in the copy of the note as received. Should find a way of interfacing with gmail so that a "sent" copy with BCCs can be seen in Sent Mail and a "received" copy can be saved in a gmail folder. This bug should replace 548885 and 548885 should be closed as duplicate. If a note is sent with a non-gmail SMTP server and a copy is placed in the Sent mail folder, the BCCs are still present, presumably because gmail is seeing the note for the first time and has no concerns about the new note overlaying the original. Note as sent with non-Gmail SMTP (and as stored in gmail sent mail folder where we directed TB to store a copy): From - Fri Mar 05 16:24:54 2010 X-Mozilla-Status: 0001 X-Mozilla-Status2: 00000000 BCC: Peter N Clough <pclough@optonline.net> Message-ID: <4B917678.50207@optonline.net> Date: Fri, 05 Mar 2010 16:24:08 -0500 From: "Peter N. I've sent a message from my gmail account leaving the to field empty and entering a e-mailadress in the BCC field. The attachment is the message in my sent items folder. (i've removed my e-mailadress) I've used Thunderbird 3.0.3
When sending directly from Gmail (Web version) or other IMAP related SMTP server the issue doesn't exist. Even when sending a message through the webversion of Gmail the BCC field can be seen in Thunderbird. So the issue only exists when sending a message through Gmail using Thunderbird
Reply to Comment 2: Yes, that is what I was trying to say in the very last paragraph of the bug description. The problem appears to be that when another mail program (TB) sends a mail through gmail.smtp.com gmail registers that version and refuses to overlay that copy with subsequent saves of the same mail i.d. with other information, like BCCs or Received headers. This was confirmed by extensive testing by M. Wada and myself. The two potential work-arounds are: 1. use web-based gmail to send the mail 2. use a different smtp to send the mail and save a copy in the gmail sent mail folder. Which you choose will depend on your working style. Neither is ideal. It would be great if TB could find a way to interface to gmail to avoid this problem.

Can we get a smtp log ?
Component: Message Compose Window → Networking: SMTP
Product: Thunderbird → MailNews Core
QA Contact: message-compose → networking.smtp
For convenience I have put the examples and log from comment 5 into an attachment as well.
There are two sets of examples below: 1. note sent from TB using gmail smtp server - original note - view of note as shown in IMAP gmail sent mail folder - view of note as received - log file to accompany above 2. note sent from web interface to gmail - as received - as shown in IMAP gmail sent mail folder - no log =============================================================================================== Original note sent from TB with gmail smtp as saved in Local Folders Sent;
